FAQ

What is a PVC Membrane System?

A membrane system is another term for using a 5’ to 6’ poly vinyl chloride material in thicknesses from 40 mil to 68 mil. The material is a vinyl substrate with a fuzzy backing that allows adhesives to form a strong bond to the wood or concrete and a dye lot and pattern embedded in the membrane surface. The membrane system is installed to interface with the buildings exterior and to ensure water flow away from the structure. A 68 mil membrane system is rated and tested as a roof grade material suitable for decks over finished living spaces.

Our deck has a rip and a burn mark in it, ca you repair it?

Yes we can. Repair techniques are welding or patching. It is very important to a maintain the over-all membrane. A compromised deck will expose the wood sub-structure to moisture. Moisture when allowed to cycle within the membrane system will expose the underlaying wood to eventual permanent damage. Fixing a small problem is less expensive and will prevent larger repairs in the future.

Can an existing wood deck have a vinyl deck surface installed on it?

Yes. a vinyl deck is installed over top of 5/8” tongue and groove plywood. existing decks can be re-sloped to increase water flow and re-sheeted. The building’s exterior should be exposed along the deck surface so that the vinyl can be adhered to any walls, behind the building’s exterior. There are options available for a vinyl deck to work with all kinds of building exteriors.

How long does a vinyl deck system last?

It is not uncommon, for a well installed vinyl deck to last 15-20 years. Installation is the critical component to a long lasting deck. Inspecting your deck and re-applying caulking will add many years to your outdoor space. If you notice any changes in your deck contact Sunguard to arrange for an inspection.

Can vinyl be installed any time of the year?

A vinyl deck has to be installed on a completely dry surface at above zero degrees Celsius. Sunguard can install decks in any weather conditions. During wet or winter conditions a deck must be “hoarded,” or covered in tarps and heated.

How do I really clean a PVC deck?

Sweep the deck, use water, and a mild bio-friendly dish soap. Mopping works well for moderately soiled decks. For heavier dirt, a broom and some soapy water can be used to scrub the soiled area before mopping. In most situations a pressure sprayer can be used effectively to clean a vinyl deck.
